Spencer sparks Maine victory

ORONO – Kasey Spencer scored two goals and assisted on the other to lead the Maine Black Bears to a 3-2 field hockey victory over the Albany Great Danes Sunday.

Shaunessy Saucier scored at 52:12 to give the 4-7 Black Bears the 3-1 lead. Rebecca Giroux made two saves on nine shots.

Tina Bryson and Michele Polizois both scored a goal for 7-4 University of Albany. Ashley Ross stopped five of 13 shots.

USM 3, Worcester State 2

At Worcester, Mass., Saturday, senior Kayla Vaughan recorded two goals in the first half to lead the 4-5 Huskies to a win.

Samantha Johnson scored the game-winner in the second half.

Nichole Gomes made eight saves on 13 shots for the 4-4 Lancers. Sadie Garnache-Poirier stopped 11 of 19 shots for USM.

UM-Farmington 3, Becker 1

At Worcester, Mass., Saturday, three UMF players notched goals to lead the team to a conference victory.

Lauren Stevens, Kristy Veazie and Kristen Allen scored unassisted goals for 6-2 UMF.

Michelle DeSantis had 10 saves for Becker. Kaeleigh Barker tallied nine saves for the Beavers.

Elms 2, Thomas 1

At Chicopee, Mass., Holly Stevens netted the game-winning goal with 9:35 left in regulation to drop the Terriers of Waterville Saturday.

Freshman Amy Miles tied the game for 4-3 Thomas. Jen Lane made two saves on 5 shots. Colleen Strunk stopped nine of 13 shots for 2-7 Elms.

Middlebury 4, Colby 1

At Middlebury, Mass., Reid Berrien notched a score and one assist to help the 5-1 Panthers cruise to victory.

The 1-4 Mules got on the board in the second half when Mary Claire Snediker recorded a goal. Jamie Enos made 12 saves. Meghan McGillen saved three shots for the Panthers.

Husson 2, St. Joseph’s 0

At Standish, Erin Nason had a goal and an assist to lead Husson College of Bangor to victory Sunday.

Michelle Barden scored 4-3 Husson’s first goal at 17:44 in the first half. Kelly Bocchino had five saves on 17 shots.

Mandy Gosselin stopped five of 20 shots for 0-8 Saint Joseph’s College.

UM-Farmington 6, Elms 1

At Chicopee, Mass., Mary Sinclair scored to goals to help lift the University of Maine at Farmington over Elms College on Sunday.

Kristy Veazie, Andrea Tyler, Elyse Cole, and Samantha Kenison each scored a goal for 7-2 UM-Farmington. Kaeleigh Barker made one save.

Christina Ouellette scored her first goal of the year for 2-8 Elms. Colleen Strunk made 16 saves.
