Voters approve repairs, land deal in Thomaston

THOMASTON – In eight minutes Tuesday, voters agreed to spend up to $45,000 to repair the brick facade on Watts Block and accepted a land deal that waives a sewer connection fee.

The 30 people who attended asked no questions, Town Clerk Joan Linscott said Thursday.

The outer layer of brick on the Knox Street side and rear of Watts Block, which houses municipal offices, the police station, community meeting rooms and a jewelry store, continually deteriorates.

The new brick will be reinforced with tension rods. Audette & SCE Inc. of Gray won the construction contract with a $39,530 proposal.

Another special town meeting article was to accept a 1-acre parcel on U.S. Route 1 owned by Midcoast Federal Credit Union in exchange for waiving the banking institution’s sewer connection fee on a construction project.

The credit union is building a new office across from where a four-story Hampton Inn Suites is being built.

The pie-shaped piece of land conveyed to the town may be used by the town for sewer expansion.
