Smith, Kane top list for UM Hall induction

ORONO – Former basketball standout Dean Smith, and ex-Black Bear baseball star Dan Kane head a list of six for induction into the University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday, Oct. 23 during Homecoming weekend.

Smith, Maine ’89 and ’91, received the 1990 Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship, awarded to the nation’s top scholar-athlete, while Kane, Maine ’88, was a member of Maine’s 1984 and 1986 College World Series teams.

Former three-sport coach William Kenyon, women’s basketball standout Jamie Cassidy, Maine ’00, hockey goalie Scott King, Maine ’90, and track and field athlete Freeman Webb, Maine ’33, will also be inducted.

The induction banquet begins with an 11:30 a.m. social hour in Wells Commons. Those seeking more information may contact the Black Bear ticket office 581-BEAR to purchase tickets ($30). All tickets must be purchased by Friday, Oct. 21.
