Driver hurt when her car, truck collide

PRESQUE ISLE – A Mars Hill woman went to the hospital complaining of head and neck pain after a crash Thursday morning in which her Ford Escort hit a trailer-truck loaded with logs, according to Presque Isle police Officer Jeff Mechalko.

Rebecca Bell, 50, was headed south on Main Street at the time of the accident. She was proceeding into the intersection of Main and State streets when a semitruck in the opposing lane, driven by George Drost, 75, of West Enfield, started to make a left turn onto State Street.

“That’s when she hit him head-on,” Mechalko said.

The investigating officer said that both drivers had a green light but that the person turning must yield the right of way to oncoming traffic.

Both vehicles received damage to the front end on the driver’s side. Mechalko estimated total damage at $1,500.

The police and fire department, as well as an ambulance, went to the accident scene. Bell was taken to The Aroostook Medical Center and later released.

Mechalko attributed the accident to driver inattention and failure to yield the right of way.
