Hampden student banned from riding school bus

A Hampden Academy student was banned Tuesday from riding a certain school bus after he reportedly challenged the bus driver to “step outside” and fight.

The 10th-grade student, who was riding a bus around 3 p.m. on Severance Road in Newburgh, initially became agitated when another student was throwing acorns at him, Maine State Police Trooper Paul White said Tuesday afternoon.

The bus driver, who was not identified, then told the unruly student to settle down. The teenager became more upset and asked the driver to “step outside,” according to White.

The driver called police and White went to the area, but the student already had been let off the bus, the trooper said.

White also said the student would be banned from riding that particular bus, but would not face further charges.

Bangor police arrested a man early Wednesday morning at Eastern Maine Medical Center after the man verbally threatened a nurse and spat in her mouth.

Joseph Mailman, 18, of Belfast was admitted to the emergency room around 11 p.m. Tuesday when an officer found him passed out near the Main Street Shaw’s.

His blood alcohol content was 0.27.

The man was uncooperative with nurses and several times was asked to leave. At one point, Mailman threatened to kill one of the nurses and then spat in her mouth when she leaned over to calm him down, according to Officer Chad Foley’s police report.

Mailman was taken to Penobscot County Jail shortly before 4 a.m. He was charged with assault, criminal threatening and disorderly conduct.
