Martin OT tally lifts Van Buren boys by Katahdin No. 1 Presque Isle blanks Hermon

VAN BUREN – Alex Martin tallied the game-winning goal with 11:35 left in the second overtime Saturday to lead No. 2 Van Buren to a 2-1 Eastern Maine Class D boys basketball quarterfinal victory over No. 7 Katahdin of Stacyville.

Brandon Boulware recorded an assist on Martin’s goal. Andrew Taylor made six saves on nine shots for the 13-0-2 Crusaders.

Katahdin’s Andy Kay scored the tying goal with 38 minutes left. Burton Brayall made eight saves on 14 shots for the 8-6-2 Cougars.

Bangor Christian 7, Ashland 0

At Bangor, Ignacio Bustos and Brock Bradford each netted two goals as No. 1 Bangor Christian shut out No. 9 Ashland.

Josh Griffin, Micah Dougherty and Gonzalo Serce scored a goal apiece for the Patriots. Bustos, Dougherty, Dan Dorman and Shane Murphy each recorded assists for the winners.

Josh Frost stopped six of eight shots for the 15-0 Patriots.

Jeremy Tarr had 17 saves on 31 shots for the 7-7-2 Hornets.

Machias 2, Schenck 1

At Machias, Chase Ross scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the second half to help lead the No. 3 Bulldogs by the No. 11 Wolverines.

Matt Marshall put 13-1-2 Machias on the board first with an unassisted score in the first half.

Trevor Violette responded for 5-10-1 Schenck of East Millinocket, tying the game off a Kerry Thompson assist. Lanny Thompson made 15 saves on 20 shots.

Garrett Getchell saved three of six shots for Machias.

Class B

Presque Isle 2, Hermon 0

At Presque Isle, Adam Kingsbury saved all three shots to earn the shutout as the No. 1 Wildcats beat the No. 9 Hawks.

Greg Whitaker and Nate Carter each scored first-half goals to help put the game away early for 14-1-0 Presque Isle.

Josh Blaine faced 15 shots for 7-7-2 Hermon and made 13 saves.

Caribou 2, Ellsworth 0

At Ellsworth, Eamonn Harrigan scored an insurance goal off a 35-yard direct kick with 23 minutes left as No. 5 Caribou shut out No. 4 Ellsworth.

Kyle Corrigan scored the first goal with 31 minutes remaining in the first half. Brad Ala made nine saves on 15 shots for the 8-6-1 Vikings.

Cory Smith had eight saves on 14 shots for the 9-5-1 Eagles.

John Bapst 1, Winslow 0

At Winslow, Chris Smith saved all 17 shots he faced as the No. 7 Crusaders upset the No. 2 Black Raiders.

Nick Hubbard scored the game-winning goal for 10-5-1 John Bapst of Bangor with a 24-yard boot in the first period. Josh Jameson assisted on the goal.

Tyler Levasseur made 11 saves on 12 shots as Winslow finished the season 11-4.

Class C

Madawaska 3, Central 1

At Madawaska, Tyler Levesque and Billy Roy each scored a goal and recorded an assist to lead No. 3 Madawaska past No. 6 Central of Corinth.

Matt Beaulieu scored in the first half on an assist from Levesque. Andrew Levesque made four saves on five shots for the 12-2-1 Owls.

Scott Kelley scored off a pass from Teague Palmer in the second half while Charles Haney had 12 saves on 15 shots for the 8-8 Red Devils.

Dexter 1, Fort Kent 0

At Dexter, the No. 2 Tigers edged the No. 7 Warriors in a match that was decided with penalty kicks.

After two scoreless overtimes, 13-1-1 Dexter converted four second-round penalty kicks to seal the win. David Wilks, Quinn Dillon, Dan Fournier and Ryan Martin all made the successful boots.

Tigers sophomore ‘keeper Chris Eastman saved five of nine shots and allowed only one PK tally in the second round.

For Fort Kent, which finished the season 6-8-2, Tom Caron converted a penalty kick. Drew Blier made 19 saves on 30 shots.

Orono 3, PCHS 1

At Orono, Tony Raymond and Jeff Normand each recorded a goal and one assist to advance the No. 1 Riots over No. 8 Piscataquis.

Chris McConnon netted a goal for 12-1-2 Orono, while Tom Smyth picked up an assist. Mat Lint faced five shots and saved four.

Andy Zimmerman averted the shutout for the Pirates of Guilford by scoring a late second-period goal. Ryan Martell stopped 12 of 15 shots for PCHS, who finishes the season 7-7-1.

George Stevens 6, Calais 0

At Calais, Ryan Kutz tallied a goal in each half to lead No. 5 George Stevens Academy to victory over No. 4 Calais.

Casey Govoni, Damian Smith, Phineas Peake and Austin Dobson each added a goal for the 9-3-3 winners.

Collin Henry made 12 saves on 13 shots for the Eagles while Scott Geel stopped 13 of 18 shots for the 10-3-2 Blue Devils.

Girls soccer

Fort Kent 1, WA Raiders 0

At East Machias, Lindsay Cyr scored an unassisted goal eight minutes into the game, giving No. 5 Fort Kent the only goal it would need to get past fourth-seeded Washington Academy.

Cyr lined up a rebound and one-touched it into the goal from the left side. Kelsie Bouchard made it stand up with 15 saves on 20 shots for the 10-5 Warriors.

The Warriors face rival Madawaska Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the semifinal round.

Megan Look made 17 saves on 30 shots for the Raiders, who finished 10-3.

Field hockey

Class C

Central 1, Hall-Dale 0 (2 OT)

At Corinth, Beth Dauphinee scored the game-winning goal with three minues left in the second overtime to lead No. 1 Central to victory.

The goal was netted off of a penalty corner pass from Tracy Underhill.

Kara Voisine made three saves on three shots for the 14-1 Red Devils.

Alyssa Withee amassed 31 saves on 32 shots for 10-6 Hall-Dale, the No. 5 seed.

Class B

John Bapst 3, Waterville 0

At the Job Corps field in Bangor, Ashley Freeman scored two goals and Marcie Schofield added a goal and two assists to lead the No. 3 Crusaders by the No. 2 Panthers and into Wednesday’s regional title showdown against Belfast.

Schofield scored the first goal with 4:53 left in the first half off a penalty stroke and set up Freeman’s goal with 15 seconds left in the first half. She also assisted on Freeman’s second goal, which was scored with 26 seconds left in the game.

Hillary Laferriere made six saves on seven shots for 14-2 John Bapst and Emily Sawyer made five saves on seven shots for 11-4-1 Waterville.
