John Bapst knocks off Presque Isle

PRESQUE ISLE – Megan Pritham scored with 2:30 left in the first half to lead No. 3 John Bapst to a 1-0 upset over No. 2 Presque Isle in an Eastern Maine Class B schoolgirl soccer semifinal Thursday.

The Wildcats were unbeaten and had defeated the visiting Crusaders twice during the regular season.

Caroline Cassling made 14 saves on 25 shots for the 14-2 Crusaders of Bangor.

Molly Hamel stopped nine of 14 shots for the 15-1 Wildcats.

The field was covered with snow and had to be plowed on Wednesday and Thursday prior to the game.

John Bapst will travel to Winslow to take on the top-seeded Black Raiders for the EM Class B title Saturday. Winslow defeated No. 4 Ellsworth 2-1 Thursday.

Winslow 2, Ellsworth 1

At Winslow, Amanda LaPointe scored on a Meryl McLellan assist midway though the second half to lead No. 1 Winslow past No. 4 Ellsworth.

Katie Caron scored on a Liz Cheesman assist in the first half for 15-0-1 Winslow. Hannah Brazier made three saves on seven shots.

Lauren Peer scored on a Casey Wyman assist to tie the game in the first half for 12-3-1 Ellsworth. Catie Cravens stopped six of 10 shots.

Class C

George Stevens 2, Orono 0

At Orono, Robin Rioux scored an unassisted goal midway though the first half to help push No. 3 George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill past previously undefeated No. 2 Orono.

Winslow Brokaw added a goal with about 10 minutes left in the second half for 11-3-2 George Stevens. Kayla Eaton made six saves on 11 shots.

Heather Woodbrey and Brittany Pinkham combined to make five saves on nine shots for 14-1-1 Orono.

Class D

Lee 2, Ashland 0

At Lee, Kimmy Thurlow and Aarika Ritchie each scored a second-half goal to lift No. 1 Lee past No. 4 Ashland.

Lee will host No. 2 Limestone today at 3 p.m. for the Eastern Maine Class D title.

Dana Houghton set up Thurlow’s goal with 23:51 left in the game and Ritchie added her unassisted goal about six minutes later.

Jackie Moors made two saves on two shots for 16-0 Lee and Ashley Nemer made 20 saves on 34 shots for 12-2-2 Ashland.

WM Class D

Greenville 1, Rangeley 0 (PK’s)

At Bingham, the top-ranked Greenville Lakers ousted No. 4 Rangeley 3-2 in penalty kicks to advance to the West final.

Alisha Gilbert scored the decisive PK for 14-1 Greenville. Beth Bartley didn’t have to make a save.

Krista Jamison saved 16 of 32 shots for 8-8 Rangeley.

Boys soccer

Class A

Mount Ararat 4, Hampden 3

At Topsham, the top-ranked Eagles held off a rally from the No. 5 Broncos when Nate Sherwood scored unassisted with 7:22 left in the game for the winning edge.

Mount Ararat took a 2-0 lead at the end of the first half. Noah Greenlaw scored off an assist from Caleb Levesque with 27:31 left in the half and Levesque then set up Adam Paine for the second goal about nine minutes later.

Hampden opened the scoring about four minutes into the second half when Elliot Potvin scored off an assist from Logan Larabee. Levesque answered for Mount Ararat on a pass from Greenlaw, but Hampden scored the next two goals to tie it at 3-3.

Larabee scored with 10:52 left and Lukas Koop added a second goal just over a minute later. Both goals were assisted by Andre Cushing.

Sherwood responded a few minutes later to seal the win for the Eagles.

Mount Ararat is now 16-0 while Hampden finished at 13-3-1.

Class B

Presque Isle 2, Caribou 0

At Presque Isle, Greg Whitaker scored on an Isaac Olsen assist with 15 minutes left in regulation to help push No. 1 Presque Isle to the win over No. 5 Caribou.

Nate Carter added an insurance goal with 12 minutes left on a Whitaker assist for the 15-1 Wildcats. Adam Kingsbury stopped both shots he faced.

Brad Ala made 24 saves on 26 shots for the 8-7-1 Vikings.

John Bapst 3, MCI 2

At Pittsfield, Josh Jameson scored with a 1:30 left in regulation on a direct kick from about 40 yards out to lead No. 7 John Bapst of Bangor past No. 6 Maine Central Institute.

Jameson scored on a penalty kick in the first half for 11-5-1 John Bapst and Ian Bamford added an unassisted goal with 21 minutes left in the second half. Chris Smith turned away six of 12 shots.

Dustin Varney tied the game with 12 minutes left in the second half for 10-6 MCI. Alex Sidelinger scored on a Mark Neace assist with 16 minutes left in regulation. Tristan Goewey stopped five of 13 shots.

Class C

Dexter 3, Madawaska 0

At Dexter, junior Dan Beatham scored two goals and sophomore Rick Stewart added a goal and an assist to lift the No. 2 Tigers by the No. 3 Owls.

Dexter will play for the Eastern Maine Class C title on Saturday against the winner of Friday’s game between No. 1 Orono and No. 5 George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill.

Stewart put the Tigers on the board just 2:04 into the game on an assist by Adam Eastman. Beatham added his first goal with 4:23 left in the first half on a Brandon Woodman assist. Beatham scored the game’s final goal with 2:21 left when he converted a Stewart assist.

Dexter coach Paul Shaw said the wet field conditions did not bother his team.

“Assistant coach Peter Murray and I talked before the game and we said the team that complains less about the field and just plays the ball will be the team that wins,” Shaw said. “Our players hustled after every ball.”

Shaw added that his team also turned in a strong defensive effort and has now outscored its opponents 61-18. Stewart and Beatham have 16 goals apiece and Stewart has 11 assists.

For 14-1-1 Dexter, Chris Eastman made five saves on eight shots while Andrew Levesque made 15 saves on 26 shots for 12-3-1 Madawaska.

Class D

Bangor Christian 4, Lee 0

At Hampden, Josh Frost recorded the shutout with 16 saves on 27 shots as No. 1 Bangor Christian defeated No. 4 Lee Academy.

Bangor Christian will play in the Eastern Maine final Saturday at Hampden against the winner of Friday’s semifinal between No. 3 Machias at No. 2 Van Buren. The tentative start time is 5 p.m.

Justin Phinney scored the only goal the 16-0 Patriots would need with 10 minutes left in the first half. Ignacio Bustos scored two goals to tie Matt Conley’s school single-season record with 32.

Brock Bradford provided a goal and an assist and Micah Dougherty added an assist for Bangor Christian.

Chris King made 16 saves on 37 shots for Lee Academy, which finished at 12-5.

WM Class D

Greenville 4, Vinalhaven 0

At Guilford, Jon Richards scored off a Richie Chilson assist 35 seconds into the game, sparking the top-seeded Lakers to a Western Maine semifinal victory over No. 5 Vinalhaven.

Joe Jardine scored two goals for 14-1 Greenville, while Jonah Lizotte tallied one. Chilson posted two assists and Kyle Whitman added another. Brandon Lavigne made eight saves on 13 shots.

Tom Sommo came up with 12 saves on 29 shots for the Vikings, who finished 7-7.

Class A field hockey

Skowhegan 1, Cony 0

At Skowhegan, the Indians claimed the Eastern Maine Class A championship by virtue of a Sam Gifford goal.

Skowhegan will play for the state title against Western Maine champion Bonny Eagle on Saturday at noon at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.

Bonny Eagle of West Buxton, the No. 3 Western Maine seed, defeated No. 1 Sanford on Thursday.
