Wednesday, Nov. 9, is the first anniversary of the death of Tyler Wintle, who died at age 10 after a three-year battle with brain tumors.

Family and friends of the youngster, who was the only child of Scott and Sandy Wintle of Dexter, are establishing the Tyler R. Wintle Scholarship Fund.

Proceeds from the fund will be given to a classmate of Tyler’s, who will graduate with what would have been his Dexter Regional High School Class of 2012.

Depending on how the fund progresses, however, the monies may be distributed before that time.

To begin fundraising for this scholarship, organizers are planning a bowling tournament Saturday, Nov. 12, at Newport Entertainment Center, and everyone is invited to participate.

Pledge sheets are now available and can be obtained by calling Sandy Wintle at 924-5641.

Prizes will be awarded and a pizza party follows the tournament.

Pastor Lois Field of Dexter United Methodist Church reports other events and fundraisers will be held periodically to benefit this scholarship.

If you cannot participate in the tournament but would like to make a donation to the Wintle Scholarship, you may mail contributions to 195 Ripley Road, Dexter 04930.

The Bangor Rotary annual Festival of Lights Parade is slightly more than a month away, and Martha Dudman encourages readers to participate.

The event will feature up to 50 units ranging from marching bands to floats, dancers and other performers incorporating the parade theme of “Reaching Out Near and Far,” which will focus on the ways in which we are helping neighbors in need in our own communities, throughout the country and in foreign lands.

The parade begins at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, and proceeds along Main Street though downtown Bangor.

The popular event has drawn thousands of folks to the city to join in the celebration of the winter holiday season that includes Christmas, Hanukkah, Ramadan and Kwanzaa.

Steven Williams of Rusty Hill Promotions and a junior audio engineering student at New England School of Communications in Bangor, is coordinating Rock for Relief, a chemical-free concert to benefit Hurricane Katrina relief.

The show, featuring 11 Maine rock bands including Nobis, Stalk the Ground, Red Cloud Revival and SoundBender, is 5 p.m.-2 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, and Sunday, Nov. 6, at the Husson College Campus Center.

Tickets are available in advance at all Bull Moose Music stores for a $5 donation and will be available at the door for a $5 donation for those with a valid student ID or a donation of $7 for members of the general public.

Williams is working with Husson chaplain the Rev. Bob Carlson to help supply gas for trucks taking supplies to hurricane victims in the South.

“A Country Christmas Fair” is being hosted by members of North Brewer Eddington United Methodist Church from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, on Route 9 in Eddington.

Selina Lufkin wrote that the fair features “handmade crafts, mittens and hats, homemade jellies, jams and pickles” as well as baked goods, a “lunch counter and a kid’s room.”

Theme wreaths will be sold in a silent auction, and theme gift baskets will be available as well.

“We believe this is a magical time for the people who come together to help at the fair, and for the people who attend the fair,” she wrote.

“It’s a wonderful holiday happening here on the bend in Eddington, and we invite everyone to come to be a part of it all.”

Dave Rode writes of a very special concert presented by the Mainely Music Chorus.

“Barbershop, Beatles and Blues” is 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at Minsky Hall on the campus of the University of Maine in Orono.

General admission tickets are $10 and $8 for students.

The concert, of course, features the chorus, but also appearances by men’s and women’s quartets, including The Maine Arrangement and Along For the Ride.

Those who attend will hear not only traditional barbershop music, but also a few familiar Beatles tunes and a special song in honor of those affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
