ATV safety course

OLD TOWN – Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3381 will sponsor a free ATV safety course taught by the Maine Warden Service 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the post at 64 Water St.

Hoops 101

ORONO – The Orono Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for its Junior NBA/WNBA basketball programs.

Hoops 101 is an instructional program for children in kindergarten, and grades one and two. Games are co-ed.

Those in grades three to eight have separate teams for boys and girls.

Children in grades three to six play recreational basketball games, and those in grades seven and eight have travel teams.

Deadline for registration is Nov. 9. Call 866-5605 for more information.

Open gym time

BANGOR – The Bangor Parks and Recreation Department offers preschool open gym play time 9:30-11 a.m. Monday-Friday, at the gym, 647 Main St.

Preschool play time is open to children up to age 5. A variety of sports and recreation equipment is provided. This is not a drop-off program.

An adult caregiver is expected to stay with and supervise the child or children.

There is no charge for the program. For more information, call 992-4490 or stop by the parks and recreation office.

Volleyball and basketball

BANGOR – The Bangor Parks and Recreation Department offers adult open gym for volleyball and basketball, which began Oct. 31. Volleyball is scheduled 7-9 p.m. Mondays, and basketball 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays, at the facility, 647 Main St., Bangor.

Volleyball and basketball are open to men and women who are at least 18 years old. The cost is $2 per session. To learn more about the program, call 992-4490.

Adventure Race

ORONO – The Marsh Island Adventure Race, sponsored by the MaineBound Adventure Center at the University of Maine, is set for Sunday, Nov. 6. Registration deadline is Friday, Nov. 4. Entrants may participate as a team or solo and will bike, paddle and run their way to the finish line.

The entry fee is $10 for UMaine students, others pay $12. To register or to obtain more information, stop by the MaineBound Adventure Center on the UMaine campus.

Open gym

BANGOR – The Bangor Parks and Recreation Department, 647 Main St., will be open for family and youth beginning Sunday, Nov. 6.

Family open gym is noon-2 p.m. and is for youth in grade five and below. An adult must stay with the child.

Youth open gym is 2:30-4:30 p.m. and is for youth in grade six and above.

The sessions are free. Call 992-4490 for more information.

BREWER – The Brewer Parks and Recreation Department has announced that the Brewer Auditorium on Wilson Street is open for a variety of activities:

. Winter walking, free, 7-9 a.m. Monday through Friday.

. Walking challenge for those who wish to register, or who want an incentive to walk. Participants are challenged to use daily progress logs and walk 2,500 minutes between Nov. 3 and April 1. T-shirts and awards will be presented. The fee is $5 for Brewer residents, $7 for others.

. Pickup volleyball games, 10 a.m.-noon Tuesdays and Thursdays. The fee is $1 per session attended.

. Pickup basketball games, noon-2 p.m. Tuesdays. The fee is $2 per session attended.
