Houlton to elect councilors, board members

HOULTON – Along with fielding numerous state referendum questions, Houlton voters will be asked to decide whom they would like to fill several municipal and school board seats when they go to the polls Nov. 8.

Six candidates are vying for three open seats on the Town Council this year. Candidates Dale Flewelling, Kent Good, Gerald Adams, Galen Wilde, Stanley Ginish and Walter Goodrich are all hoping residents will choose them to fill the positions.

All of the candidates have been involved in municipal government in some form in the past. Adams is the current council chairman, while Kent Good, Galen Wilde and Dale Flewelling are former councilors.

Goodrich has served as chairman of the town’s planning board and past president of the Chamber of Commerce, and Stanley Ginish is a board of budget review and Shiretown Development Corp. member.

Residents also will be casting ballots to fill seats on the SAD 29 school board, the Houlton Water Co. board of directors, and the board of budget review.

Three residents are vying for two open seats on the HWC board. Incumbents James McPartland and Galen Hogan are on the ballot, as is Sue Tortello.

Five candidates are running for three open seats on the SAD 29 board. Incumbents Mark Bossie, Elizabeth Anderson and Cynthia Hillman-Forbush are being challenged by Scott White and Donna Burpee in that race.

Although only two residents are running for the positions, three seats need to be filled on the budget review board. Incumbent Dana LaPointe is vying for one of the three-year terms, as is Mitchell Holmes.

A write-in candidate is also needed to fill a two-year term left vacant by a resignation.

The polls will be open at the Gentle Memorial Building from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8.
