Santayana once opined, “Men who don’t know their history are doomed to repeat it.” I wonder if the 55 percent who voted not to repeal the so-called gay rights law have considered what their vote means.

First, this vote means that Gov. Baldacci has disenfranchised every Maine voter. No longer can the state’s citizens have confidence that their vote will be honored if it is the majority vote. If the people in Augusta don’t like a vote’s results, they just ignore it and send it back to the voter in a different form.

Second, this vote allows gays and lesbians who teach our children to be able to hold homosexuality up to young minds as a viable alternative. The governor seeks to make what has always been unacceptable, acceptable.

When I have a chance to vote for governor again I will let Gov. Baldacci know with my vote how I feel about his cowardly collapse to the special interests.
