BANGOR – Independent gubernatorial candidate Alex Hammer remained hospitalized Thursday after being struck by a pickup truck while running across Union Street Wednesday morning.

Hammer, 40, of Bangor suffered a broken pelvis, shoulder blade and a fracture in his back as a result of the accident, which happened just after 9 a.m. near the intersection of Union and First streets. He also suffered a head wound, he said.

From his hospital bed, Hammer said he intended to continue his campaign, if he is able. Hammer was unsure how long he would remain in the hospital but suggested his injuries could require a “fairly long recovery.”

Hammer, who is self-employed, is one of several gubernatorial candidates seeking to qualify for public financing under the Maine Clean Elections Act.

The driver of the pickup, Ernest Roy, 39, of Bangor, was not injured. Police said no charges would be filed.
