BREWER – What General Motors’ restructuring plans might mean for two local auto parts manufacturing firms was unclear Monday.

Frank Buscemi, public affairs manager in the Detroit office of ZF Friedrichshafen AG, said Monday that it was too early to tell how GM cutbacks might affect firms that do business with the financially troubled carmaker. ZF Friedrichshafen AG, based in Friedrichshafen, Germany, owns the ZF Lemforder and Brewer Automotive Components plants in Brewer, according to the company’s official Web site.

“We do quite a bit of GM work up there” in Brewer, Buscemi said. “It’s really too early to tell.”

In announcing its plans to close nine plants and eliminate 30,000 jobs in North America by 2008, GM indicated it intends to “reduce assembly capacity” on the continent.

Buscemi said reducing capacity could mean either eliminating certain lines of vehicles or transferring their production to other sites.

“That could be anything,” he said. “We don’t have an effect that we can see as of today.”

In Brewer, about 300 people work at the ZF Lemforder plant and another 100 or so work for Brewer Automotive Components. The facilities produce chassis components for several automotive manufacturers.
