Police ID woman who died in Bangor

BANGOR – Authorities on Monday identified the woman whose body was found outside her Bangor apartment one day earlier as Mary Elaine Keenan.

Her body was found at about 5 p.m. in the driveway of her Union Street residence, discovered by two of her children, Detective Sgt. Paul Kenison of the Bangor Police Department said Monday. Her children had been looking for her when they discovered the body, Kenison said.

It wasn’t immediately known what caused her death, although Kenison said there was nothing to suggest foul play.

“We didn’t see any signs of trauma,” he said.

Keenan, 49, who usually went by Elaine, appeared to have been out in the cold overnight as she was last seen outside the house late Saturday night. A cabdriver picked Keenan up from a Brewer motel and dropped her off at home about 11 p.m. that same night, Kenison said.

An autopsy was performed Monday by staff at the state medical examiner’s office, although a cause of death will have to wait pending further study, a representative of the medical examiner’s office said Monday.

Authorities are waiting for the results of a toxicology test to determine whether alcohol was involved, which is typical, the representative said. The further study could take up to three or four months, she said.

Kenison said he didn’t know whether Keenan had been drinking that night.

As they investigated the incident Sunday, the police taped off the driveway in front of the home at 441 Union St., which is across the street from the Beth Pancoe Aquatic Center.
