ELLSWORTH – A former Castine selectman convicted of criminal threatening and assault has reported to Hancock County Jail to serve a 30-day sentence.

Kenneth R. Eaton, 60, opted last month not to seek re-election after he pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife and a man at a Castine restaurant last January. Eaton brandished a handgun during the incident, punched the man and left with his wife, according to police reports.

In October, Eaton was sentenced in Ellsworth District Court to serve two concurrent 30-day sentences in jail for his convictions on one assault charge and a criminal threatening charge. He also received a suspended nine-month sentence on a third charge for assaulting his wife.

Eaton, who had to forfeit the revolver he used in the incident as part of the plea agreement, is expected to serve nine months of probation upon his release. He started serving his jail term at 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1.
