UMPI, UMFK, St. Joe’s, Husson ready for tourney

Several years ago, Husson College of Bangor played in the Maine Athletic Conference alongside the University of Maine-Presque Isle, UMaine-Fort Kent and rival Saint Joseph’s College of Standish.

These days, things are much different.

Husson of Bangor is a member of the North Atlantic Conference and UMFK plays in the Sunrise Conference while UMPI and Saint Joseph’s are NCAA Division III independents.

Despite their different affiliations, the women’s basketball programs from those four schools will converge on Husson College’s Newman Gymnasium this weekend for the Paul Bunyan Tournament.

The action begins Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. game between UMFK and Saint Joseph’s, followed by Husson and UMPI at 7:30.

The non-championship event continues Sunday with the Owls and Monks squaring off at 1 p.m. and the Eagles and Bengals playing at 3 p.m.

Coach Kissy Walker’s rebuilding Husson squad brings a 3-3 record into the tournament, coming off Tuesday night’s hard-fought 68-60 loss to Maine Maritime Academy in Castine.

The Eagles are led by junior guard/forward Carmen Ballard (13.3 points per game), freshman guard Jenny Rollins (12.7 ppg) and junior forward Jodie Merchant (10.8 ppg).

The Owls, under first-year head coach Steven Gray, are off to a 3-3 start. UMPI, which had a three-game win streak snapped Thursday night by Maine Maritime Academy, is led by Sarah Beasley, Ashley Epright and Jessica Cyr.

UMFK has posted a 3-5 record thus far, including a 57-51 loss to UMPI on Wednesday night. Coach Lucas Levesque’s Bengals feature junior guards April Allen and Nicole Corbin and freshman center Amanda Davis.

The Monks of coach Deb Reardon come into the tournament with a 2-5 record. Their mainstays include senior guard Brittany Rauscher, sophomore guard Marie Lint and junior guard/forward Kaylin Regula.
