BREWER – Three girls recently received the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts. They are:

. Sarah Hodgins, daughter of Keith and Sandy Hodgins of Brewer.

. Sarah Taylor, daughter of Nancy Astbury of Eddington and Donald Taylor of Bangor.

. Ashley Austin, daughter of Roanne Austin and Bruce Le-Vasseur of Brewer and Ardane Austin of Bangor.

The Gold Award and other recognitions were presented on behalf of the Abnaki Girl Scout Council by staff member Pam Tower during a ceremony on Nov. 26 at Comins Hall in Eddington.

For their final projects, each girl undertook the design and execution of a different renovation project for the historic Comins Hall.

Taylor refurbished the second-floor library-sitting-ante-room.

Hodgins renovated the serving area, including sandblasting and repainting the tin ceiling.

Austin redecorated the foyer and added new lighting.

There are future plans for a new sign and garden, which will be completed in the spring.

Comins Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Austin is now a first-year student at the University of New England in Biddeford. She is majoring in medical biology with a goal of becoming a physician’s assistant.

Taylor is a student at the University of Maine. She is majoring in foreign languages with a goal of becoming a translator.

Hodgins is also at the University of Maine and is majoring in chemical engineering.

All three are graduates of Brewer High School. The young women were members of Troop 432 in Brewer, and Sandy Hodgins, Kathy MacLeod and Roanne Austin served as troop advisers.
