ORONO – Maynard Walton has been coaching in the Eastern Maine Indoor Track League since the Reagan administration, and he knows that the meets that count are run in mid-February, not late January.
“Eight weeks from now, there is going to be an all-together difference,” the veteran Bangor High coach said after a multi-team meet Wednesday night at the UMaine field house. “You have to tell that to the kids. You look good now, but the thing is everyone else is gonna improve, so you gotta keep at it.”
Walton’s boys and girls teams, defending league champions, swept the team titles in both meets. The Ram girls, who have won three of the last four EMITL titles, bested runner-up Hampden Academy 170-74. John Bapst of Bangor was third in the seven-team field with 63, followed by Mount Desert Island (61), Foxcroft (36), Hermon (10) and Sumner of East Sullivan (2).
The Bangor boys were just as dominant, overwhelming Hampden 182.5 to 82.5. Rounding out the field were MDI (46), Foxcroft (39), Sumner (20), Hermon (18) and John Bapst (13).
In the boys meet, Bangor junior Casey Quaglia, who was the workhorse in the Rams winning the EM title last winter, has gotten off to a slow start this winter after having an appendectomy over the summer.
“I’ve had horrible times this year, still recovering from surgery over the summer, so hopefully the times will improve,” he said.
Quaglia did pick up a pair of wins, in the 400 (55.06 seconds) and the 800 (2:14.21). He led a Bangor sweep in the 400 and teammate Branden Mountain finished right behind him in the 800.
“Branden Mountain had a great race in the 800, he gave me everything he had,” said Quaglia, who also anchored Bangor’s winning 4×800 team. “I had nothing left in that race. I couldn’t have done that time without him.”
Walton said that with eight weeks left in the season, his team has a lot of work to do.
“We’ve got more work to do with the boys [than the girls], we saw what we have to do tonight, and its good,” he said.
Cam Cormier took first in the 200 (23.87) and second in the 60 (6.95) and ran on the winning 4×220 team. James Rogers took the pole vault (10-6), Avery Curtis the hurdles (10.10) and Elliott Meguier the 2-mile (11:21.96).
MDI’s Alex Keene won both the long and triple jumps, with distances of 19-7.50 and 39-4.25, respectively.
In the girls meet, Bangor showed why they’ve won three of the last four EMITL championships, but like his boys, Walton says there is still work to be done.
“We’ve got six talented girls and about 10 girls need to improve. If we can put 16 girls together, we’ll be good,” he said.
After two weeks of competition, Walton said there are a plethora of teams that could challenge Bangor for the title.
“One thing that is happening, [the league] is losing a lot of veteran coaches, and teams that have veteran coaches are the ones that are putting it together,” he said. “[John] Bapst looks pretty good as far as talent, and Orono’s got few numbers but talent.”
Jolene Belanger, perhaps the Rams’ best athlete, picked up wins in the long jump (15-3.00), triple jump (32-3.25) and 800 (2:26.94). Jennie Lucy was second to Belanger in the 800, and Lucy led off the 4×800 relay team, which took first.
Bangor’s only other individual winner was Joanne Tsang in the pole vault (7-0).
MDI’s Sarah March and Lauren Maltz of Hampden proved that they could be two of Eastern Maine’s top sprinters when championship time rolls around. March won both the 60 and 200 with times of 7.80 and 28.30, respectively while Maltz won the 400 (1:03.68) and was second in the 200 (28.62).
