Man arrested after failing to give real name

A man who refused to give his real name to Bangor police officers Tuesday night was arrested at a Hammond Street apartment.

Steven Hayden, 34, of Westbrook called 911 shortly after 11 p.m. but quickly hung up. When a dispatcher called back, Hayden said everything was fine.

He could not, however, identify the address where he made the call from and police knew he did not live there, according to a report.

When Bangor police officers arrived at the apartment, two males and a female were inside. The woman told officers that she wanted Hayden to leave. Hayden told police he did not have any identification and gave John Riley as his name.

Officers ran the name and after nothing turned up, they believed it to be false. Hayden still refused to give his name and said, “Take me to jail,” according to police reports.

Hayden was taken to jail briefly but was released with only a summons for failure to provide his real name. Not long after he was released, Hayden turned up back at the Hammond Street apartment.

Police found him sleeping on a mattress in the basement. He was told to leave and warned not to return.

A 94-year-old Bangor woman alerted police recently that someone had stolen a Wal-Mart gift card valued at $500 only to learn that the card has since been used.

The woman told police that she used the card once at Wal-Mart in Bangor. She hasn’t seen the card, a gift from her son who lives out of state, since.

The woman did keep her receipt and Bangor police were able to use the numbers on the receipt to track additional purchases.

Police learned that the card’s remaining balance had been spent during three different trips to Brewer Wal-Mart on Sunday and Monday.

Officers will continue to investigate the case, but they believe the suspect is a woman based on the items purchased in Brewer, including thong underwear, according to a police report.
