Houlton man indicted in ’05 slaying case

CARIBOU – A Houlton man suspected of killing a local woman and leaving her body in a motel room was indicted on Friday by the Aroostook County grand jury on a charge of intentional or knowing murder.

Daniel Boles, 30, was charged with the death of Jacqueline Shorey, 57, of Houlton, a longtime County resident who had been living in Louisiana and was planning to move there permanently.

Shorey was found dead on Dec. 9 inside her Scottish Inns motel room after friends asked motel staff to check on her well-being. Shorey reportedly was in Houlton for a hearing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, but did not show up for the court proceeding.

Boles was arrested for the crime in mid-December at the Maine State Police barracks in Houlton. Police would not say whether Boles turned himself in or if he was arrested after police questioning. Police have released little information about the murder investigation, including the cause of Shorey’s death and whether a murder weapon was used.

Boles is being held at the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton as he waits for his arraignment in Superior Court.

Boles’ indictment was among 38 handed up Friday by the grand jury against 37 people. The grand jury met for two days: on Jan. 5 in Houlton and Jan. 6 in Caribou.
