BANGOR – A Honduran national with a half dozen known aliases who has been deported several times was sentenced on Monday in U.S. District Court in Bangor to 10 months in prison.

Jose Fredy Acosta-Cardona, 23, of Harrington pleaded guilty in August to illegal re-entry after deportation.

He faced up to two years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Acosta-Cardona was arrested May 31 after a Maine State Police trooper stopped the pickup truck in which he was a passenger in Trenton at a routine commercial vehicle safety checkpoint. He did not have any valid identification papers, according to court documents.

He has been held at the Piscataquis County Jail since his arrest.

The Honduran has been returned to his native country three times by immigration officials since he first entered the United States illegally in 1997 when he was 15 years old.

Acosta-Cardona last entered the country near Calexico, Calif., according to court documents. He went to South Carolina, and then made his way to Maine.

He is expected to be returned to Honduras after he completes his sentence.
