ORONO – A typo in the February 2006 Verizon Yellow Pages is making it difficult for some people to call the town office.
By dialing the number listed, callers are connected to the lieutenant’s secretary at the Maine State Police barracks in Orono, not the tax collector or town clerk.
No one at the Maine State Police was available Tuesday for comment.
The number also is incorrect on the Verizon.com Web site.
“We are aware of it,” Orono Clerk Nancy Ward said Tuesday, noting that it was a mistake on Verizon’s end.
Calls to Verizon weren’t returned Tuesday, but town officials said they have contacted the company.
“They can’t do anything about it because the directory’s done for a year,” Ward said.
Ward said she is unsure how the error was made because the numbers have been correct in previous phone books.
“We haven’t changed any numbers,” she said.
The main number for the town office is 866-2556 and should be the number listed for the clerk and tax collector.
Another misprint in the phone book regarding the town listing is for the manager at 8 Bennoch Road. The address and phone number in the listing are for the Orono Parks and Recreation Department, not the town manager.
In an effort to inform residents of the errors, town officials said they intend to include the correct contact information in the “Orono Observer,” the town’s newsletter, and on the local access cable channel.
A similar misprint two years ago in the EZ To Use Big Book confused the Lincoln Fire Department’s emergency number with that of the Mattanawcook Academy principal’s office.
