Big School (Classes A-B)
KEVIN STAPLES
Staples, a senior on the Mount Desert Island swim team, won the 200-meter freestyle in 1 minute, 47.43 seconds to lead the Trojans to the state Class B title. Staples also swam on the 200 freestyle relay team that set a state record of 1:30.05.
Small School (Classes C-D)
DEREK PELLETIER
Pelletier, a member of the Fort Kent ski team, posted three top-10 finishes in the state Class C ski meet and was runner-up by a point in the skimeister competition. Pelletier was fifth in the classical cross country, seventh in the freestyle cross country, and seventh in the giant slalom.
GIRLS
Big School (Classes A-B)
KENDRA GOULD
Gould, an Old Town senior, won the triple jump at the Class B state track and field championship meet Monday with a personal-best distance of 34-1/2, and finished third in the long jump, to help Old Town earn a third-place team finish.
Small School (Classes C-D)
LACEY FARRAR
The Greater Houlton Christian Academy senior forward-center racked up 16 points to lead the Eagles in a 64-61 upset win over No. 3 Lee, the defending Class D state champ, in an Eastern Maine Class D quarterfinal Monday. Two of her points came at the free-throw line late in the fourth quarter. She also had five rebounds.
