Maine women earn spot in HE tourney

ORONO – The University of Maine split its weekend series against Boston College at Alfond Arena and in the process earned a spot in the four-team Hockey East tournament.

Ultimately, the Black Bears advanced by virtue of Providence’s win Sunday over Connecticut. Fourth-seeded Maine plays No. 1 New Hampshire Saturday at noon at Northeastern University’s Matthews Arena.

UMaine beat Boston College, the tourney’s No. 3 seed, 4-1 Saturday, then dropped a 3-2 decision on Sunday.

In Saturday’s game, Pam Patterson scored two goals, including one of three in the first period, to pace the Black Bears to victory.

Patricia Gagnon posted a goal and an assist for UMaine and Sonia Corriveau added the other goal. Karine Senecal and Brigitte Laflamme registered two assists each.

Genevieve Turgeon made 11 saves for the Bears.

Becky Zavisza score the goal for Boston College. Alison Quandt made 23 saves.

In Sunday’s game, Deb Spillane, Erin Blood and Shannon Webster each scored a goal for Boston College (19-10-4, 16-4-1 HE). Alison Quandt made 25 saves on 27 shots.

Jenna Cowan scored at 15:12 in the second period with assists from Cheryl White and Vanessa Vani for the Bears (17-8-4, 9-8-4 HE). Patricia Gagnon brought Maine within a goal at 7:41 in the third period on assists from Julie Poulin and Brigit Laflamme.

Genevieve Turgeon stopped 16 of 19 shots.
