Peregrines, eagles topic of program Ice fishing derbies set throughout region

Charlie Todd, an eagle expert and wildlife biologist for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, will present a slide program about eagles, peregrine falcons and other raptors in Greenville on March 16.

Todd’s program will be held at 7 p.m. at the Community House, and will be sponsored by the Natural Resources Education Center.

Todd has been involved in eagle research, surveys and management in Maine for 30 years and has aided in the return of peregrines to the state.

The NREC is a nonprofit educational organization formed in Greenville in 1995. Its mission is to educate and inform people about the Moosehead region’s natural resources of the past, present and future and to be the primary source that people rely on to understand the culture, natural history and uses of the North Woods.

Fishing derbies on tap

Winter weather finally has arrived and ice anglers are taking advantage of the conditions with a full slate of ice fishing derbies scheduled across the state.

Among the derbies on tap in the coming days:

. In Tremont, the Tremont School is sponsoring a derby today to help fund the eighth-grade class trip. The derby includes all Mount Desert Island ponds that are open to fishing. The weigh-in will be held at the school from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.

. In Monson, American Legion Post 116 is holding a derby today on Hebron Lake. The weigh-in will be held at the Monson Museum.

. Down East, a derby will be held today and Sunday on all legal waters of Penobscot and Washington counties. Weigh-ins will be held in the parking lot of Smith’s General Store in Springfield and at Junior Lake in Lakeville.

. In Bingham, the Upper Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce will hold a derby today and Sunday for anglers targeting Wyman Lake in Moscow. The weigh-in will be at Williams General Store in Bingham.

. On Islesboro, a derby will be held Sunday at Meadow Pond. The weigh-in will be at the pond.

. At Sherman, the Sherman Area Memorial VFW Post 2299 will hold a derby March 11. The derby will be held on Plunkett Pond in Benedicta, with the weigh-in taking place at the pond.
