PALM BEACH, Fla. – Freshman Pat Moran of Winterport pitched six strong innings and was backed by an 18-hit attack as the University of Maine baseball team outslugged St. Bonaventure 14-10 Tuesday afternoon.
Moran scattered six hits and four runs, striking out three and hitting two batters, while earning his first collegiate win.
Joe Hough paced the Black Bears (2-4) with a solo home run in the first inning and two singles. Curt Smith rapped a double and two singles with two RBIs and Mo Rivera stroked a triple and two singles.
Frosh Billy Cather posted two singles and two RBIs, while Joel Barrett and Matt McGraw each contributed two singles and an RBI.
T.J. Pennino powered St. Bonaventure (0-3) with three singles and an RBI, while Kieran Malone plated two runs with two singles.
The Bears, who did not commit an error, earned their second straight win.
UMaine jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on Hough’s homer and Smith’s one-out RBI single. The Bears made it 6-0 in the third with a two-out rally that included Frank Pesanello’s run-scoring infield hit, an RBI triple by Rivera and Cather’s RBI single.
The Bonnies scored three times in the third, but UMaine piled on six runs in the fifth to break the game open.
Rivera and Cather led with singles, then Kevin McAvoy of Brewer pushed a run across with an infield single to shortstop. Hough and Barrett followed with run-producing singles, before an error and Smith’s double plated two more runs against starter and loser Brian Hardner.
The Bears were up 13-4 when Moran was lifted and St. Bonaventure reached reliever Jose Mendoza for six hits and five runs before Mitchell Clegg recorded the final three outs.

At Miller Huggins Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., Jason Harvey had a double, two singles and three runs scored and Devin Potvin added three singles as the Eagles topped St. John Fisher of Rochester, N.Y.
Potvin’s RBI single in the top of the fourth inning sparked a four-run Husson rally that erased a 4-2 deficit.
Danny White added a pair of singles and three runs scored for the Eagles.
Freshman right-hander Anthony DeRosa of Bangor earned his first pitching win, scattering eight hits over six innings before getting relief help from Sammy Adolphsen.
The win was the 997th in Dr. John Winkin’s coaching career.

At Orlando, Fla., Sarah Bennis pitched four hitless innings and struck out three batters to lead the University of Maine Black Bears by St. Joseph’s of Philadelphia.
Amy Kuhl drove in Molly McKinney with a double as Maine erupted for five runs on three hits in the second inning.
McKinney’s RBI single scored Tara Vilardo in the fourth with the other run. Erin Provost drove in two runs while McKinney, Kuhl and Donna Grimm each had an RBI and scored a run.
