Penobscot voters OK new cemetery funding

PENOBSCOT – Voters on Tuesday approved all articles on the municipal side of the town meeting warrant and added funds to one account. They agreed to boost the town’s cemetery account to $2,000, an increase of $1,500 from proposed amounts, according to Selectman Bing Gross. The additional funds will help develop lots at the town-owned Bay Cemetery, Gross said Wednesday.

“We’ve only got three lots left there,” he said. “We need to get more lots and get a road through there.”

There is sufficient land in the cemetery in which to develop new lots, Gross said, and most of the funds will be used to build a road to provide access to that land.

The rest of the warrant articles were approved with little discussion. Voters approved a total of $376,037 in town spending. Of that, $167,264 will come from property taxes, $43,113 from surplus, and $165,660 from excise tax.

Selectmen have not set the mill rate for this year yet. They will have to wait until after the second session of the town meeting, which will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the elementary school gym.

There was a three-way race for a seat on the board of selectmen. Gross won re-election, withstanding a challenge from Glen Ashe and Peter Colman. Gross received 123 votes, Colman 70, and Ashe 39.

There were two seats open on the school committee. Incumbent Gerald Markley received 121 votes to win another three-year term on the committee. Challenger Karrie Prescott received 105 votes. In the race for a one-year term on the school committee, challenger Christine Harmon defeated incumbent Larry Martel in a 127-99 vote. Martel had been appointed to fill a vacancy on the board until the annual meeting.
