CAMDEN – A 23-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday and charged with assaulting her 2-year-old stepson.
According to a report released by Police Chief Phil Roberts, officers were called to an apartment on Matthew John Avenue about noon Wednesday on a report of possible domestic abuse.
Entering the apartment, Officer Allen Weaver noticed a 2-year-old boy on the floor crying. Bruises were evident on the boy’s forehead, and Weaver called for an ambulance.
As they waited for the ambulance, Weaver said, Katrina Oakes, 23, the boy’s stepmother “repeatedly apologized to the boy and said that she did not mean to hurt him,” according to the police report.
Further examination of the boy revealed bruising on the left side of his head and on his feet, legs, right hand and back.
Oakes later told Lt. Randy Gagne she had thrown the boy against a wall. The boy was taken to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport by ambulance and remained there Thursday morning, Roberts reported.
While at the apartment, officers learned there was a 6-month-old daughter in the home. State child protective services workers determined the infant could remain in the care of the father, Daniel Oakes, who had returned home from work while police were still there.
Katrina Oakes was arrested and charged with assault on a child under the age of 6. She was taken to the Knox County Jail, where she remained in custody Thursday, Roberts reported.
