Town meetings

Burnham

Town elections reported Friday saw Stuart Huff voted in as a selectman, Carolyn Hamel as town clerk, Arlene Miles as treasurer, and Charles King as highway commissioner.

Huff received 68 votes, Hamel 56, Miles 72, and King 60, all against write-in candidates.

In two referendum questions, voters decided 44-29 to keep town clerk an elected position and 47-19 to mandate the town clerk work out of the town office.

At the town meeting at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 18, voters will consider a $383,000 municipal budget. The budget would be a $30,000 increase from last year. The meeting will be held at the Reynolds Corner Municipal Building.

The annual town meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 18, at the Central Maine Auction Hall. The municipal budget is approximately $800,000, with many increases caused by the rise in fuel prices, according to First Selectman James Bennett. All three of the town selectmen seats are up for election, with James Bennett running for his sixth year, Gerald Berry running for his second, and Michael McGagh running to fill the empty seat. New items to be voted on include combining two accounts – the firetruck replacement account and firehouse rebuilding fund – into one to be called the fire department reserve account. A decision will also be made regarding whether the town should build a new town office or repair the current one. The town is also asking for a fuel surcharge for garbage collection.
