Show, live auction to benefit Stonington man

Friends and community members have much for you to eat, do and enjoy when you attend a Benefit Country Show and Live Auction for Stonington resident Gleason Gray.

After a massive heart attack, the 42-year-old lobsterman and carpenter is recuperating at home.

Community members are working to help their friend and his wife, Wendy, during this difficult physical and financial time, since the couple has no health insurance and “the bills are considerable,” reports organizers Dave and Tanya Taylor.

The fundraiser begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at the Deer Isle Town Hall, and a donation of $7 per person will be accepted at the door.

The Taylors report the event will feature lots of great food, including chili and hot dogs, so they hope you will “come hungry.”

Baked goods also will be available, and there will be plenty of auction items up for bid, ranging from lobsters to gift certificates for goods and services.

The group Dave Taylor and Friends will provide entertainment.

If you are unable to attend the benefit for this 11-year member of the Odd Fellows, contributions in Gray’s name can be mailed to Dave and Tanya Taylor, P.O. Box 46, Sunset 04683.

For more information, call the Taylors, 348-2816, or Miriam Black, 326-4559.

Belfast Public Health Nursing Association is offering a noninvasive general foot care clinic from 9:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday, April 18, at the association’s office, 119 Northport Ave. in Belfast.

The cost is $20, cash or checks only, and you must have an appointment, which can be made by calling Diane Whitten at 338-3368.

Friends of the Eastern Maine Community College Library are trying something a little different for the 2006 Books2Eat Edible Book Contest 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, in Rangeley Hall on the EMCC Bangor campus.

This year, the professional chefs’ entries will be up for bid as popular local volunteer auctioneer Sue McKay tries to get as much money for them as she can, which is why Visa and MasterCard will be accepted.

Admission is free for entrants, $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Maria Hautala and members of the Welcoming Congregation Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Bangor invite you to view the second film in its free series at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, in the church vestry at 120 Park St.

“If These Walls Could Talk 2” is an HBO-produced drama examining the changing lives of lesbians in the United States, both politically and personally.

The cast includes Vanessa Redgrave, Marion Seldes, Ellen DeGeneres and Sharon Stone.

The film is rated R, runs 105 minutes, and a discussion follows the film.

Jim Bird, Joyce Rumery, Elizabeth Payne, Richard Brucher and Judy Markowsky are leading an Earth Day Cleanup sponsored by BACORD and Fields Pond Audubon Center from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 22, in the Bangor Mall area.

Volunteers are asked to meet at Borders, Staples or Hannaford in the Bangor Mall, and help clean up litter to prevent it from blowing into the Penjajawoc Stream, a wildlife corridor from the Penobscot River to the Penjajawoc Marsh.

Volunteers should wear gloves and hiking boots since some of the hillsides are slightly steep.

Sam and Kathy Thompson and Alan and Sue Cust invite you to a Benefit Auction beginning with preview and registration at 5 p.m. and the auction starting at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at the Holy Family Parish Hall on South Brunswick Street in Old Town.

The event includes a 50-50 raffle and light refreshments available for purchase.

Proceeds benefit the “Step UP” program to replace the front steps of the church.

Due to deterioration and safety concerns, one section of the steps has had to be closed off; however, parishioners are working hard and their generous pledges, to date, have raised two-thirds of the replacement cost.

Among the auction items are a family camping package from Dick’s Sporting Goods, an Old Town Canoe kayak, paintings by local artists, gift certificates, 100 gallons of fuel, a signed University of Maine ice hockey jersey, a scenic foliage plane ride, a Cyr bus trip, homemade crafts and special-occasion gift baskets.

Members of the Step UP auction committee hope to make this an annual event to benefit the parish, which also needs a new kitchen to accommodate funeral luncheons and other services.
