Pitching sparks Beavers to doubleheader sweep

FARMINGTON – Sarah Defilipp and Megan Carman each went the distance as the University of Maine-Farmington swept Thomas College of Waterville 2-1 and 1-0 in a softball doubleheader Wednesday.

In the opener, Megan McCrum singled and scored on a passed ball while Holly Tripp scored on a wild pitch for the Beavers’ runs.

In the nightcap, Defilipp allowed two hits and struck out six in pitching a shutout for UMF.

Sara Martin’s RBI single accounted for the game’s only run, scoring Holly Tripp, who had singled.

Bowdoin sweeps Husson

At Bangor, Bowdoin College of Brunswick racked up 25 runs on 32 hits to sweep Husson 18-3 and 7-1.

In the first game, the Polar Bears scored 15 runs in the final two innings to break open a 3-3 game.

Megan Rogers slammed a two-run homer and tallied an RBI single, totaling three runs driven in. Danielle Gagnon notched five hits, including a double, and knocked in five runs.

Carolyn McAvoy’s RBI double sparked the Eagles.

In the second game, Brittany Ogden laced a two-run double to power Bowdoin to the sweep.

Danielle Chagnon hit a two-run homer for the winners.

Lindsay Mitchell knocked in a run with a single for Husson.

Bates sweeps UM-Presque Isle

At Lewiston, Erik Hood hit two three-run home runs and Adam Worrall belted a grand slam as Bates took two from University of Maine-Presque Isle.

The Bobcats won the opener 17-3 and took the nightcap 13-11.

In the first game, Hood went 4-for-4, including a three-run homer, six RBIs and four runs scored.

Brandon Elie singled twice and Charles Reece had a double for the Owls.

In the second game, the Owls jumped out to a 9-5 lead, including five unearned runs in the first, but the Bobcats rallied all the way back..

Shane Dupuis had three hits, including a double, for the Owls. Josh Biddington, Todd Thibeault, and Chris Remick each knocked in two runs.
