Your clothes aren’t you

In the March 29 edition of the Bangor Daily News, an insert featured editorials written by students. One subject for the editorials and cartoons was whether or not there should be dress codes in schools. They stated that school dress codes were taking away their individuality.

I am 13 years old and go to a private school where we wear uniforms. The older girls wear a blue skirt and a white, blue or yellow shirt. The boys wear tan pants and a navy, white or dark green shirt. Both of these outfits need to be worn tucked in with no tears.

Those who wrote editorials and drew cartoons regarding dress codes and uniforms have almost no restriction on their outfits. I question their judgment of uniforms when they haven’t had to wear one. There are still plenty of clothes out there that are allowed and look good.

It doesn’t make sense to take away the dress code in public schools because your personality should be your individuality, not your clothes. Also, no matter what you wear, whether it be a uniform or something else, you are still an individual, therefore, your individuality is in who you are, not in what you wear.
