If you want to make money, it seems that real estate is the market to be in right now. Reality TV didn’t want to get left behind, and with HGTV already running shows all day about buying, selling and fixing homes, Bravo now has jumped on the real estate bandwagon.
As a recent homebuyer, I can’t get enough of remodeling and redecorating shows such as TLC’s “Trading Spaces” and HGTV’s “Design on a Dime.”
But Bravo’s new “Million Dollar Listing” takes a slightly different – and more expensive – look at the world of West Coast real estate and the struggles that buyers and sellers sometimes encounter.
While the plot (if reality television actually has a plot) is a little slow, it’s fun to get a glimpse of how the other half lives.
The homes featured in the show are in Malibu and Hollywood and sell for anywhere from $1 million up. Most have views of the ocean, private pools and numerous customized features – such as the stripper pole seen in one Hollywood dream home.
Agents from ReMax and Coldwell Bankers are featured in the show, and each has his or her own flair and personality.
My personal favorite is the husband-and-wife team of Dia “The Diva” and Ray Schuldenfrei. They are in the top 1 percent of ReMax agents nationwide and have more than 30 years of experience selling homes in the Hollywood Hills, according to Bravo.
Admittedly, they play good cop, bad cop to ring in the highest possible commissions.
The best part about the show is that it isn’t all smiles and happy new homeowners. Deals fall through, relationships are strained, and the cutthroat world of real estate is exposed.
Other agents range from 24-year-old rookie Madison Hildebrand, who’s trying to get his first sale, to the self-proclaimed “Condo Queen of Malibu,” Lydia Simpson.
Lydia means business and admits that plans for her upcoming wedding take a backseat to closing the deal.
Anyone who has gone through it knows that buying or selling a house is both stressful and exciting. The combination of the two makes for great drama in “Million Dollar Listing.”
The show premieres at 10 p.m. Monday, June 12, on Bravo.
