Kristen Andresen’s article, “Ladies’ Night: Rise in drinking rate among young women alarms public health experts nationwide” (BDN, April 13), was engaging and beautifully written and simply brought to light a national cultural trend and put it in a local context. It was well researched and supported from many different points of view, right down to the local liquor store retailer.
Although I appreciate the university’s need to “rebut” the article and restate their stance on campus drinking from a PR point of view (BDN, April 24), I don’t think the article had an “anti-university” tone. In fact, I don’t believe the young women she was writing about even lived on campus.
This type of reporting I find refreshing and relevant, even to a parent of high school students, and I hope to see much more of it in the Bangor Daily News.
Kudos to Andresen.
