Brewer man pleads guilty to taxi robbery

BANGOR – An 18-year-old Brewer man charged in the armed robbery of a Bangor cabdriver last winter pleaded guilty Monday to Class A robbery.

James A. Emerson entered his guilty plea before Superior Court Justice Jeffrey Hjelm. Hjelm requested a pre-sentence report that will tell him about Emerson’s criminal and personal history before imposing sentence.

The state will recommend that Emerson serve four years in prison for the crime, according to Deputy District Attorney Michael Roberts. A sentencing date has not been set.

Emerson and 18-year-old Benjamin Jones and two juveniles were armed with two sawed-off shotguns, a handgun and a stun gun when they jumped into a cab in downtown Bangor last winter and tried to rob the driver.

The driver for the Airport River City Taxi was ordered to drive toward Valley Avenue when he picked up the group. On Bruce Street, the driver felt a shock to the back of his neck and was told to turn over his money.

The driver refused and ran from the cab with his money in his pocket. The group of men then fled to a getaway car parked nearby.

The driver of the getaway car was also a juvenile. The three juveniles have been processed through juvenile court. Two of the juveniles were sentenced to the Maine Youth Center for an undetermined amount of time.

The third juvenile, who turned 18 shortly after the attack, was sentenced as a juvenile but was ordered to serve 30 days in Penobscot County Jail.

Jones was sentenced earlier this summer to eight years in prison with all but 21/2 years suspended and six years probation.

Emerson had been out on bail but was arrested again earlier this month on criminal threatening charges. Those charges resulted from an altercation at a Bangor trailer park during which Emerson allegedly displayed a knife to a park resident, according to Roberts.

Those charges prompted a judge to revoke Emerson’s bail and he has remained in custody since, Roberts said.
