Are you ready for bluegrass in Pittsfield?

The McFravis Family Fiddlers and The Union River Band certainly hope you are, because they’re ready to entertain you at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at Pittsfield Community Theater.

The concert benefits the Pittsfield Public Library Capital Campaign to help restore and expand the community facility.

“Area bluegrass and fiddle fans are in for a treat,” wrote Ann McGowan, adding that “ticket sales are expected to be brisk,” so it might be wise to purchase them before the night of the performance.

Advance tickets are $10 and can be obtained by calling Donna Chale at 487-3710 or Steve Peterson at 487-3700, and at the Pittsfield Public Library or the Pittsfield Movie Theatre.

Tickets at the door are $12.

The McFravis Family Fiddlers are mothers, daughters, sisters and cousins from the Waldoboro area, McGowan wrote of the musicians, who “play a wide variety of fiddle music from folk to classical” and have “previously been featured at the National Folk Festival in Bangor.”

Contact person Steve Peterson leads the Union River Band, which, McGowan wrote, is “considered Maine’s top bluegrass band.”

The concert is sponsored, in part, by the Maine Expansion Arts Fund.

The multiple award-winning state champion Hampden Academy Mock Trial Team, coached by attorneys Bill Devoe and Jim McCarthy, with teacher coach Kathryn King, is hosting a major fundraiser to help with finances to participate in national competition.

The HA Mock Trial Team Dessert Theater, featuring this year’s case, State of Oklahoma v. Dakota Boren, will be held at 6:30 tonight in the Reeds Brook Middle School cafeteria.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students and $18 for families, and are available at the door.

One lucky attendee will win a touring kayak donated by Bangor Ski Rack.

A free Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Social and Auction for children and adults begins at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at Hammond Street Congregational Church in Bangor.

Proceeds benefit the endowment for the Howard Foundation scholarship program.

Linda Estes reports the fundraiser is wheelchair-accessible, and an interpreter of sign language will be available.

The auction of donated goods and services, at 3 p.m., features everything from a three-credit class at Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor to a necklace from G. M. Pollock & Sons, stained glass, artwork, furniture and children’s items.

President Joyce Given and members of the Millinocket Regional Hospital Auxiliary invite you to its yard and bake sale 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at the MRH Baron House Garage and Yard, located near the MRH lower parking lot.

All proceeds benefit the MRHA Scholarship Fund.

If you have items to contribute, you can drop them off from 8 a.m. to noon and 3-6 p.m. today at the garage.

The public is cordially invited to attend a book signing with 92-year-old Frances Caroline Hartgen from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, April 28, at Dirigo Pines in Orono.

Now the residence of the former University of Maine librarian and widow of professor and artist Vincent Hartgen, the signing features “A Maine Passage, Two Memoirs: Close, Like Yesterday,” written in 1977, and “For Vincent: A Love Story,” written in 2003 and published by Wildflower Lane Publishing.

Roger George, producer of the Bangor Rotary Club presentation “Music Off Broadway,” encourages you to mark your calendar for this special event, which features some of the most popular, well-known names in local vocal talent and takes place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 3, in Peakes Auditorium at Bangor High School.

Advance tickets – $15 for adults, $10 under 18 and $40 for families – are available in Bangor at the Grasshopper Shop, BookMarc’s, Patrick’s Hallmark Shop on Broadway and Mr. Paperback at the Airport Mall.

Proceeds will benefit Bangor Y after-school programming, Camp Bangor scholarships and the Bangor Public Library program for middle school children.
