Hospitality training available Down East Sessions in Ellsworth, Machias intended to help businesses improve guest service

MACHIAS – The tourist who asks the food server or hotel desk clerk what there is to do during a Down East vacation deserves a better reply than, “Not much.”

Rather than respond in a way that conveys boredom and little knowledge of the area, those working with tourists should present a lively, positive approach that makes visitors feel good about their time Down East.

Later this month, training sessions that lead to more pleasant customer service and better hospitality will take place in Ellsworth on May 23 and Machias on May 31.

The workshops are open to any businesses that open their doors to the public, or have employees that meet and greet the public.

The all-day sessions (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) will focus on the cycle of guest service; dealing with guest expectations; understanding quality, value and cost and what results in guest satisfaction; and handling communication and interaction with guests.

The power of a smile, as well as delivering service, managing the wait, and providing service excellence, will also be covered.

Organizers hope that employees and staff from convenience stores, retail stores and service stations will also take part in the training.

“These front-line people are the representatives of our entire area,” said Barbara Mauer of the Downeast Acadia Regional Tourism council, which is sponsoring the workshops. “They are key to making tourists feel welcome.”

Donna Fichtner, the executive director of the Bangor Convention and Visitors Bureau, will lead the sessions. With more than 30 years in tourism and hospitality management, Fichtner achieved the tourism industry’s certified hospitality educator status in 2000.

Twice she has been honored by the Maine Tourism Association – first in 1993 for distinguished public service and again in 2003 for marketing in her work promoting the National Folk Festival in Bangor.

Fichtner currently serves as the vice-chair of the Maine Tourism Commission.

As for the “What’s there to do around here?” question, the program will cover both Hancock and Washington County events, attractions and other highlights within each county.

Liz Fauver, the owner of the Blue Butterfly Bed and Breakfast in Machias, is among those who have signed up for the training – even though she already can rattle off a local “to do” list for her guests.

She is taking the training because “you can always learn something new to make you a better businessperson and attract more clients.”

The Ellsworth session will be at the Holiday Inn. The Machias session will be at Carter’s Banquet Hall. Registration for either session is $20 by May 12 and $25 after May 12. Lunch and workshop materials are included.
