Thrift shop donations to benefit senior center

Preparations are being made for the reopening of Aunt Nellie’s Attic on Route 1A in Holden on Monday, May 15.

Sponsored by Hammond Street Senior Center in Bangor, Aunt Nellie’s Attic sells new and used items that have been donated to the thrift shop, reports Jill Gott of the senior center.

All of the proceeds from the store are used to fund operational and programming costs for the center, which offers area seniors the opportunity to enjoy gathering in a social atmosphere with an emphasis on learning and personal enrichment.

The thrift store is run by volunteers and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday during the warmer months.

Contributions are being accepted for the store, and any donations would be greatly appreciated.

Call Gott at 262-5532 for more information.

Two coming events will help support efforts of the Hampden Academy Music Association to provide a variety of educational opportunities for its young musicians.

Mark Parent reports that Cabaret Night, an evening of music featuring Hampden Academy Voices Unlimited, will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, in Skeehan Gymnasium at the academy.

The second event is a swing dance, featuring the Hampden Academy Jazz Ensemble and the John Bapst Memorial High School Jazz Band, at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 13, in Skeehan Gymnasium at the academy.

Before the dance, swing dance lessons will be offered by members of Back Door Dance Studio at 6 p.m.

Tickets for both events are $5 for adults, $3 for students and $15 for families, and can be purchased at the door.

Maine Center for the Arts board member Mel Braverman of Bangor reminds readers that the MCA is selling 300 raffle tickets for $100 each, with the winner receiving $10,000 while helping the MCA raise $20,000.

The winning ticket will be drawn on Thursday, May 11, during the performance of the “Will Rogers Follies” at the MCA on the University of Maine campus in Orono.

Tickets are available by calling the MCA box office at 581-1755.

Also that evening, Eastern Maine Medical Center Auxiliary will honor past auxiliary presidents during a fundraiser for the Rosen Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at EMMC.

The event takes place during a preshow reception at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at the MCA.

While raising funds for services and programs for newborns in our part of Maine, the auxiliary will honor those who have served in its highest office during the past 102 years.

The reception for past auxiliary presidents precedes the performance of “The Will Rogers’ Follies,” which begins at 7 p.m. May 11, at the MCA.

Some tickets remain for this Tony Award-winning show. The cost for the pre-performance reception and show is $60, $25 for the reception only or $36 for the show only.

Tickets can be purchased by calling EMMC Healthcare Charities at 973-5055.

The final, free help session for seniors needing assistance with the Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit, or Medicare Part D, program is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Bangor High School, 885 Broadway.

Trained volunteers will help narrow down the drug plan options and find the one best suited for you.

Preregistration is not necessary, but you should bring a list of current medications, with the correct spelling, dosage and frequency, the price, name of the preferred pharmacy and a copy of any letters received from Social Security, the centers for Medicare and Medicaid, and the state, which are related to the prescription drug benefit.

Restoration work is planned inside the historic Bangor Opera House, home to Penobscot Theatre Company.

In a recent conversation with PTC director Scott Levy, he told me that he is having a very difficult time finding any photographs of the inside of the theater, and he wonders if any readers might have some in their personal photo collections.

Levy said planners would like the theater to look much as people remember it, but he needs photographs of the inside to accomplish that task.

If you can help, call Levy at PTC, 942-3333, or write or visit him at the theater, 131 Main St., Bangor 04401.
