Bangor East wins tourney opener

FRANKFORT – Katy MacDonald pitched a four-hitter to help Bangor East defeat Winslow 12-1 in state Little League all-star softball action for ages 11-12 Friday.

Maureen Capehart hit a double and two singles to spark the Bangor East offense in the tourney opener. Amy Hackett also doubled and singled while Emily Heath and Kayla Lauritsen each singled twice.

Brynne Davis hit two singles to lead Winslow.

Calais 8, Knox Suburban 7

At Frankfort, Stephanie Perry hit an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth and singled twice to lead Calais to the opening-round victory over Knox Suburban.

Darcy Gillespie, who also tripled, pitched a five-hitter, struck out eight batters and walked two to notch the win.

Jessica Dodge tripled for Knox while Sarah Robinson had an RBI single.

Senior League baseball

Coastal 13, South Portland 10

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, a four-run fifth inning propelled the Coastal All-Stars of Blue Hill to the opening-round win at the Senior (ages 15-16) Little League State Tournament.

Dusty Bates earned the win in relief after holding South Portland to three runs on six hits over 41/3 innings.

Nick Henry had a double and two singles for two RBIs and Ryan Hutchins had three singles and four RBIs for Coastal. Tony Conroy had a double, single and RBI. Chris Candage singled twice.

Bob Hood led South Portland with three singles and two RBIs. Andrew Wood doubled and singled for three RBIs and Dave Bogart had two singles.

Saco 8, Auburn 2

At Mansfield, Anthony Barone pitched a four-hitter and struck out five batters while walking two to lead Saco to the opening round victory.

Four of Saco’s runs were unearned as Auburn committed seven errors.Derek Benavides had two singles and three RBIs.

Ryan Ford led Auburn with a triple and a single.

Orono 6, Penquis 2

At Old Town, Ryan Brown (5-0) pitched a one-hitter, struck out 10 batters and walked four to notch Orono’s 16th complete game of the season and keep the Twins undefeated.

Brad Wheaton went 2-for-3 with a double and a single, but Bo Thomas delivered the big hit of the game with a three-run home run in the third for Orono. Brian Tewhey hit a solo shot in the second.

Bill Kane broke up Brown’s no-hit bid with an RBI double in the sixth.

Bangor sweeps Waldo

At Heddericg Field in Brewer, James Strout pitched a complete-game two-hitter with six strikeouts as the Comrades earned a 4-0 win in the opening game of a doubleheader. Bangor won the second game 7-5 and clinched a Zone 1 tournament berth.

In the first game, Bill Chapman hit a two-run single for Bangor. Jim Shea singled twice and Andrew Sullivan added a double and a single. Chris Carman and Ben Cowan each singled once for the Wildcats.

In the second game, Shea’s two-run single in the bottom of the fifth provided the winning runs. Brian Worster and Nate Hall each addded an RBI single in the inning. Shea and Sullivan finished with three singles apiece.

Nick Dakin and Kenton Spaulding each hit an RBI single for Waldo and John Bonney singled twice.
