Two groups of Abnaki Girl Scout Council alumnae are being sought to participate in separate events.

Liz O’Donnell of the AGSC in Brewer reports Camp Natarswi alumnae are welcome to participate in the 70th Anniversary Reunion, which is planned for Aug. 25-27.

“We are especially interested in finding women who attended camp” during the past 30 years, O’Donnell wrote.

The council is also seeking “those who have earned the highest award in Girl Scouts, beginning with the Golden Eaglet, the First Class Award, the Curved Bar and current Gold Award,” she wrote, adding that you do not need to have earned the award as a member of the Abnaki Girl Scout Council.

The group is planning a fall recognition banquet for recipients of these awards, and O’Donnell stresses they are seeking those who earned the award in the Abnaki council and have moved away, as well as those who earned the awards elsewhere and now live in the Abnaki area.

Jessica Richards of Orrington, the incoming chairwoman of the University of Maine student chapter of the American Marketing Association, is coordinating a Dress for Success clothing drive to assist students at Penobscot Jobs Corps Center in Bangor obtain proper attire for work and job interviews.

For this community service project, Richards has placed a collection box in the atrium of the Donald P. Corbett Business Building on the University of Maine in Orono campus, but she will also make arrangements to pick up clothing if you e-mail her at jessica.richards@

She seeks clean clothing in good condition and suitable for the workplace for young people 17-23.

Richards will accept donations through Tuesday, May 30.

Gov. John Baldacci has declared May 22-26 Women and Substance Abuse Recovery Week, and two events are planned to helped increase awareness.

Of approximately 85,000 Maine residents in need of drug or alcohol treatment, 25,000 are women, many of whom are of childbearing age.

The Maine Office of Substance Abuse, Department of Health and Human Services, with support from AdCare Educational Institute of Maine, will host National Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders vice president Kathleen Mitchell, who will address that subject from 8:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday, May 24, at Maple Hill Farms in Hallowell.

The $10 fee includes a continental breakfast.

Cynthia Magnuson of the American Cancer Society office in Topsham reminds readers that children and youth affected by cancer who are ages 4 through high school are welcome to attend Camp Rainbow during the week of June 19, for free.

The ACS is able to offer this wonderful opportunity through the cooperation of Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, the Bangor Ronald McDonald House and Bangor Y Camp Jordan.

Children in treatment as well as those up to 10 years post-treatment are eligible.

Children 4-6 can attend with a parent or guardian. Those 7 and older can attend alone, but attendance is subject to the approval of the medical director.

Maine children are given preference, but out-of-state children are also encouraged to apply.

Around-the-clock medical staffing from the EMMC Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Clinic is provided, and chemotherapy and blood tests are given onsite.
