Plant sale to benefit Ruggles House museum

Members of the Ruggles House Society invite you to its fourth annual Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 27, at the historic facility located at 146 Main St. in Columbia Falls.

Nancy Herr reports that perennials, annuals, seedlings and vegetable starts will be available from plants donated by society members and others in the community.

If you want to donate plants the day of the sale, you can do so, or, in advance, by calling Ellen Tenan at 546-7903.

Herr also announced that the museum will be open for the June 1-Oct. 15 season.

Guided tours are conducted from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children.

She explained that the 1818 Ruggles House, which opened as a museum in 1951 and is noted for its Adamesque-style Federal period architecture, flying staircase, intricate carvings and period antiques, is maintained by the society with the support of voluntary contributions and fundraisers such as the plant sale.

Carolyn Drew of Mount Desert invites you to the Island Quilters 10th Anniversary Quilt Show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 27, at the Somesville Firehouse, which is located by the blinking light on Route 102 on Mount Desert Island.

Admission is $2. There you will enjoy viewing more than 80 quilts, finding sale items, raffles and an antique sewing notions display.

My colleague, Newspapers in Education manager Kim Whitmore, reports Literacy Volunteers Bangor Chapter is hosting the LV Bangor Yard Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 27, at 25 Greenfield Ave., which is off Essex Street across from Holiday Trailer Park, in Bangor.

“There will be some office furniture, children’s toys, household items and more,” she wrote.

Ann Carter reports the town of Charlotte and the Charlotte Historical Society are conducting a Memorial Day Service beginning at 8:15 p.m. Monday, May 29, at Round Pond Cemetery in Charlotte.

Veterans and members of the military are particularly invited to attend this day of remembrance, during which pupils from Charlotte Elementary School, along with society members, will lay cedar wreaths on the grave of each veteran.

Carter reports the pupils collected cedar branches from woods belonging to Thursa Sawyer to make nearly 90 wreaths they will lay this day.

The Memorial Day Service and wreath laying will be followed by a brunch at the Charlotte town hall, “to which all are welcome,” Carter wrote.

Kyle DeVaul, executive director of Summer Festival of the Arts in Southwest Harbor, has announced that the artist showcase gala begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 1, at the Deck House Restaurant in Southwest Harbor.

The gala offers hors d’oeuvres and desserts, and features performances by SFOA teaching artists and friends.

Tickets are $40 each or $75 for couples, with all proceeds benefiting SFOA.

The public is cordially invited to a Good Old Fashioned Franco-American Soiree, featuring The Silvertones, from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Old Town.

Sponsored by the Franco-American Resource Opportunity Group, the student group of the Franco-American Centre Franco-Americain at the University of Maine in Orono, “the proceeds are to benefit the first ever Franco-American Scholarship,” explained Lisa Michaud of the Centre.

She added that the students “are working hard to make this a reality,” which means they would certainly appreciate your support at this scholarship fundraiser.

Admission is $10 for the event that features fun, food and music.

Nelson Durgin, executive director of Phillips-Strickland House in Bangor, reminds interested parties to “save the date” and register as soon as possible for the ninth annual Phillips-Strickland House Golf Tournament.

That fundraiser begins with registration and a cookout from 11 a.m. to noon, and a shotgun start at 12:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono.

The cost is $95 per player, and you can receive a registration form or more information by calling Durgin at 941-2820.

The registration deadline is Friday, Aug. 18.

All tournament proceeds benefit the residents of Phillips-Strickland House.
