Parkman man charged in domestic assault

PARKMAN – A local man was arrested early Tuesday morning after he allegedly assaulted his wife and then aimed a shotgun at a deputy.

Michael Meyers, 44, was charged with domestic assault and resisting arrest and was taken to the Piscataquis County Jail in Dover-Foxcroft where bail was set at $2,500. If unable to furnish his bail, Meyers will make his initial court appearance on Monday, June 12, in 13th District Court.

Additional charges are pending against Meyers, according to investigator Guy Dow of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department.

Meyers’ wife dialed 911 at about 10:30 p.m. to report she needed an officer at her Route 150 home, but the line went dead before she could complete her sentence, according to Dow.

When officers arrived, the woman was standing outside the home. She did not need medical attention, Dow said.

The woman told police that her young children were inside, and she needed to get them out because her husband was armed, Dow said Tuesday. She told police she had asked Meyers to leave and he would not do so. Police were told that Meyers was in an upstairs room with some firearms. The woman quickly went inside and, with the help of investigator Jamie Kane, rescued the children.

Shortly after the woman left the home with her children, Meyers allegedly came outside armed with a shotgun in his hands and a rifle draped over his shoulder, according to police.

Meyers allegedly refused to drop the gun when Dow commanded him to do so and instead pointed the shotgun at Dow.

Dow said Meyers then fled into the woods behind his home and at some point later returned to the house unseen by officers who were searching for him. When it was discovered Meyers was back inside the house, Lt. Robert Young called him on the telephone and convinced him to give himself up. He was arrested at about 1:30 a.m.

Young praised both Dow and Kane, who he said used great restraint during the incident.
