Towed car breaks free, crashes into large tree

ROCKLAND – A Volvo being towed by a motor home, broke free Sunday and wound up crashing into a large tree on Camden Street.

Wayne Purves, 64, of Oroville, Calif., was traveling south on Camden Street in a 2002 motor home, towing a 1991 Volvo station wagon when the accident occurred, Police Sgt. Kenneth Smith said Monday. The Volvo was being towed legally with a tow bar, Smith said.

The tow bar bolts pulled through the frame of the Volvo and the vehicle separated from the motor home. The station wagon traveled south for a bit and then veered right near Burger King, crossing a sidewalk and slamming into a large tree. The force of the crash flipped the Volvo onto its side.

The station wagon had $5,000 damage and the tree’s bark was scathed, but there were no injuries, Smith said. The RV’s driver was not charged, Smith said. Officer Anthony Camporiale investigated the incident.
