MEDWAY – As many as 200 people – including as many as 100 anglers – are expected for this weekend’s Medway Open bass fishing tournament, organizers said Monday.
The tournament is among four held in Medway, Lincoln, Seboeis, and Old Town over the summer by the Greater Lincoln Bass Masters, a fishing club that has about 40 registered members, club president David Whalen said.
“It’s almost like an ESPN event for some people when they see the fish catch or weigh in,” Whalen said Monday. “They will come from miles around to participate.”
Saturday’s event will start at 5:30 a.m. with 35-50 boats with one or two fishermen apiece assembling at the Medway Landing off Route 157 and hitting the Penobscot River, Whalen said. They will fish until a weigh-in at about 2 p.m.
Their target: largemouth or smallmouth bass, Whalen said.
“It’s not out of the scope of things for 15 pounds or better to show up for five fish. That’s a good average for five fish,” he said.
Local Boy Scout troops will be there, selling food to benefit their efforts, Whalen said.
Entry is $12 per person and the top six winners can earn as much as $1,300 for their catch, he said.
Other tournaments will be held July 22 on the Penobscot River at the boat landing in South Lincoln off Route 2, on Aug. 12 on South Branch Lake in Seboeis, and on Sept. 9 on the Penobscot River in Old Town. Anyone interested in registering or joining the club can call Whalen at 794-3096 or by visiting glbm.org.
