Interstate Bakeries reports better sales

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Interstate Bakeries Corp., the bankrupt maker of Hostess Twinkies and Wonder bread which has a plant in Biddeford, Maine, said Wednesday its losses in April were cut by half from the month before.

For the four weeks ending April 29, the company reported losing $7.5 million, compared with $15.2 million during the period ending April 1.

Revenue for the month increased slightly to $225.7 million from $224.9 million the month before.

During the same period a year ago, the company reported sales of $265 million and losses of $24.1 million. Since then the company has streamlined its operations, closing nine bakeries, hundreds of thrift stores and distribution centers and eliminating around 6,000 jobs.
