Separate crashes in Pittsfield injure two

PITTSFIELD – Two separate crashes on Wednesday sent the drivers of both vehicles to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

About 6:30 a.m., Frederick Horne, 38, of Waterville fell asleep at the wheel while northbound on Interstate 95 in Pittsfield, according to Maine State Police Trooper Jeff Beach.

Horne bounced his vehicle, the make and model of which was not provided, off the driving lane guardrail and then ricocheted across both lanes of the highway and struck the guardrail along the passing lane.

Beach said Horne was taken to Sebasticook Valley Hospital for neck and back injuries.

About 1:30 p.m., Angela Rumery, 27, lost control of her 1988 Chevrolet Celebrity while headed north on Higgins Road near the Route 2 intersection.

Pittsfield Officer Rodney Minoty said Rumery was adjusting swim goggles for her 6-year-old nephew, who was a passenger in the car, when she drove into the ditch on the right side of the road, and then continued to drive up the embankment until she struck a stone wall, which flipped her vehicle over.

Rumery was not wearing a seat belt, but the child was, Minoty said.

The child was not injured, but Rumery struck the steering wheel in the crash because her car was not equipped with air bags. She was taken to Sebasticook Valley Hospital complaining of chest pain.

Minoty was assisted at the scene by the Pittsfield Fire Department.
