News in brief SURRY: AUTISM SERIES OFFERED

Therapist, educators, family members and others involved in the care of someone with autism are invited to attend a series of three seminars that will explore the potential of music therapy. According to certified music therapist Alan Wittenberg of Surry, music can stimulate and motivate people of all ages diagnosed with autism, who are characteristically withdrawn and detached from their surroundings. Professionals working with this population often find that music helps their clients progress in speech, motor skills, socialization and other areas, he said. “Music touches us when words cannot and opens new channels of communication and contact,” Wittenberg said. “Music therapy goes beyond words and emotionally, physically and intellectually touches those with psychological and special needs.” The three different seminars will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 16, June 23 and July 14. The cost for each session is $60, or all three for $150. For more information or to register call 667-1308 or e-mail alanmt@acadia.net.
