Maine athletes shine at New Englands

Waynflete of Portland’s Christine Ordway defeated Pam Emery of Rhode Island’s North Providence High to earn the New England High School Tennis Championship Monday at Hall High in West Hartford, Conn.

New England championships for golf were also held Monday. Bucksport’s Whitney Hand, the defending Maine state girls individual champion, had an 87 for the top Maine girls score.

Ordway, who won the state singles championship and helped the Flyers to the Class C state team title, had a bye in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals she beat Amber Schneider of Rice High in Vermont 6-1, 6-1.

Chantalle Lavertu lost of Lewiston in the quarterfinals, as did Maine boys representatives Mike Hill of Mount Ararat in Topsham and Parker Swenson of North Yarmouth Academy.

Telstar of Bethel’s Brady Chapman and Cheverus of Portland’s Anthony Ardito both carded a 75 in the boys golf division. The rest of the Maine finishers were NYA’s James Sterling (76), Waterville’s Joe Flowers (77), Falmouth’s Adam Packard (81), Buckfield’s Matt Lowell (82) and Houlton’s Peter Hagan (88).
