Maine teen driver laws took effect in 2003

Maine requires many of the restrictions for teen drivers that were cited as reducing deaths among 16-year-old drivers. Maine’s graduated driver’s license program for new drivers under 18 went into effect on Sept. 13, 2003.

Drivers under 21 must hold a learner’s permit for six months before applying for a license. They’re barred from using a cell phone during that period.

Once a license is obtained, drivers under 18 are forbidden for 180 days from carrying passengers except immediate family without being accompanied by a driver who is at least 20, licensed for at least two years and seated next to them.

Teen motorists also are banned from using a cell phone and from driving between midnight and 5 a.m. during the 180-day period.
