Historical society to host Gettysburg talk

BREWER – Hampden historian Brian Swartz will present a program on “Maine at Gettysburg” during the monthly meeting of the Brewer Historical Society at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, at the Clewley Museum, 199 Wilson St., Brewer. The program will entail a slide presentation and discussion about the roles Maine military units played during the climactic three-day battle fought July 1-3, 1863, at Gettysburg, Pa. Swartz has visited the battlefield at Gettysburg every year for the last 10 years.

Swartz, a longtime student of Civil War history, has visited many Civil War battlegrounds many times. He became interested in Civil War history in 1961 when he was 7 years old. He has written stories about Civil War landmarks for the Bangor Daily News.

Swartz’s photograph of the North Carolina Memorial at Fox’s Gap, Md., won first place in the close-up category of The Civil War Preservation Trust’s 2006 10th annual photo competition.
